Opinion: We’re legalizing home-based food businesses to help San Diegans

In September, we co-authored a board letter to begin the process of authorizing Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations, or MEHKOs for short. These home-based food businesses uplift non-traditional food entrepreneurs who are usually women, immigrants, people of color and others facing barriers when looking to start their own business especially as they try to do so during the COVID-19 pandemic.

MEHKOs will give budding restaurateurs and microentrepreneurs the opportunity to legally operate a small scale, low-volume retail food business out of their homes without the huge financial burden required for a traditional brick and mortar enterprise.
